Matt Brouwer is an artist for whom the trappings of fame and stardom have begun to mean very little. He has discovered more important things to say, with an outlook that is both spiritual and humanitarian. It is with great pleasure that we announce Matt's ongoing involvement with New Beginning Resources Inc, and the construction of a school in the mountain village of San Pedro Jacopilas, Guatemala. This remarkable experience in Central America was crucial in Matt's writing and recording his current album, Unlearning. Fresh back from his latest trip to San Pedro, Matt shares with audiences that the story continues as classes are set to begin at the fledgling school within the year, a reality that began as a dream only 3 years ago and with the potential to change the light of the village inhabitants.
Unlearning, released into national distribution in 2006, was a watershed release for Matt, particularly as it was informed by these unique circumstances. He dug deep into his soul to ask himself questions about the world today. With lyrics that reveal a raw honesty and themes ranging from loneliness to consumerism, loss and rediscovered faith, he crafted a second album that was lauded worldwide, and took him in a new direction. Matthew Paul Brouwer was born in Truro, Nova Scotia, the sixth of seven children raised on a dairy farm. At the age of three, Matt's father died in a car accident, an event that has had a profound effect on his life and later on his song writing.

In college he got involved in creating music with a few friends, and out of a sheer sense of community, the gathering grew to hundreds of people in a short space of time. Matt says of this time: "We got together because we had a hunger spiritually, to know God. We were not skilled musicians, just willing to do whatever it took to be together." That experience gave rise to his first album, Imagerical, which became a gospel music favorite across North America, winning countless awards along the way. Soon, Matt was a professional musician, having left college to become an articulate artist of humility who has a genuine and heartfelt connection with his audience.

Matt counts among his influences the likes of James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow and U2. He has received extensive critical acclaim since he began putting his music out there:
"Absolutely Perfect! Unlearning is a mature and sensitive project with a personal 'indie' feel that draws listeners into the lyrics. The music on this disc gets better and deeper with every listen." Monica Seidler CCM Europe

"Matt Brouwer is one of those rare artists whose true passion comes through every song and lyric in his music. Without a doubt, he is among the most genuine and talented artists I've encountered in music today." Jason McArther, A&R Director, Reunion Records

Unlearning is available in stores across the country and the songs "Here I Am Again" and "I Shall Believe" are impacting at AAA radio stations. Matt will be on a Borders Books and Music Store tour throughout August and September in support of Unlearning.
