Band: Symmetry & Ryan Lewis
Shying away from standard lyrical stereotypes as excess,
sexism, and drugs; Symmetry’s approach is far more down to earth, and is what
many consider to be "just honest hip hop." In 2007, Symmetry released his
sophomore album, Dusty Pickup. Met by rave reviews across the board, Symmetry
went on to put together a live band in order to bring his musical vision to
life, which was so successful that he has stated that he will never play with
turntables ever again. An outlook that helped craft his brand new, self-titled
opus that was written alongside the universally praised Lewis.
Blending
elements of pop, hip-hop, electro, indie, soul, and rap; the duo’s self titled
EP has the creative urban feel of acclaimed artists like Gnarls Barkley & The
Roots along side the melodic sensibilities of bands like The Script and MGMT.
Since there beginning in 2006 they have collaborated with a variety of artists
including Nikola Bedingfield, Paul Rivers Bailey, and Geologic (Blue Scholars).
The album’s stand out tracks include the sharp musicianship and ferocious vocal
work of “Back in Businessâ€, the tongue-in-cheek bite of “School Days†and the
cheeky keyboard work & indie-orientated melodies of “Firefliesâ€. Elsewhere, the
60’s pop feel and bouncy edge of “Cuttin’ Out†are delectable and incredibly
addictive.
Sharp, insanely talented and dangerously intelligent; Symmetry and Ryan Lewis
have created a fantastic pastiche of classic hip-hop, soul, indie rock & pop
that appeals to fans of all the above and beyond. If you like your hooks, your
lyrics creative and your humour twisted, you will love this album.
