June 11, 2008 Web User Police in Wales will today appoint the
UK's first sergeant with special responsibilities to tackle internet crime.
The 'e-sergent' will be joined by four 'e-detectives', one for each of Wales'
four police forces in September. Figures reveal that internet crime cost Welsh
business £294m last year, or almost £100 per person.
The identity of the e-sergeant will be revealed later today at a ceremony
in Newport.
The creation of the e-police force is a result of a pioneering partnership
between the Welsh assembly and the Welsh police force which led to the
establishment of e-Crime Wales four years ago. It was set up to protect
businesses as well as consumers from the growing threat of internet crime.
Detective chief superintendent Chris Corcoran of North Wales Police said:
"Businesses in Wales face global e-crime challenges, as threats become more
aggressive, intelligent and complex."
It is hoped that in the future businesses will be attracted to Wales by the
creation of the e-police force.
