Math And Music Together In A Call For Worldwide Antiwar Expressions
Colombian mathematician and pianist Jorge Hernan Pelaez, launches on Friday 30 of July, his new antiwar website www.musicagainstwar.com, calling for worldwide activists, students, writers, scientists, artists, actors, musicians, filmmakers and celebrities to create an international movement of explicit and authentic expressions against any form of war.
Ideas, songs, photos, videos, letters, poems and any other proposals can be mailed to: info@musicagainstwar.com and during the rest of 2004, the artist will gather the best material and summarize it in a multimedia document that will be sent to United Nations, in an attempt to show the world an artistic and peaceful channel of protest against war. All artistic expressions received in a digital format will be uploaded on the website on a weekly recurring basis.
His personal peace proposition began one year ago with the composition and production of his first piano album "Music Against War", written as a tribute to war victims. Specifically, the artist is donating 50% of the sales of his album to a non-profit organization, which will manage and control the funds, with the final objective of investing them in musical education for war victims.
Legendary Motown Artist Rick James Passes Away
Rick James passed away this morning at 9:20 AM in his sleep of natural causes at his Los Angeles home, per his spokesperson. He was 56 years old. He is survived by his 3 children (Ty, Rick Jr., Tazman) and 2 grandchildren (Jasmine and Charisma).
Last month, he performed his hit "Fire & Desire" with Teena Marie at the BET Awards. He had finished an album and was preparing for its release next year. He was also in discussion with various studios for a movie based on his life.
Born in Buffalo, NY, known as the King of Punk Funk, and the bad boy of Motown, Rick James blended the hard core funk of his predecessors James Brown, Sly Stone and George Clinton with the Rock and Roll theatrics of the Rolling Stones and Kiss. Rick James was the quintessential "Super Freak," a term he coined in the 1980's with the multi-platinum song he wrote, arranged, produced and performed sharing that same title. The single catapulted the album STREET SONGS to #1 on the R&B charts and #3 on the pop charts.
This mega-talented, multi-Grammy and American Music Award winner played at least five different instruments and had not only sold millions himself, he wrote and produced songs for Eddie Murphy, Mary Jane Girls, The Temptations, Teena Marie and Smokey Robinson, all selling millions as well. He licensed his work for sampling by artists such as Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu and MC Hammer, whose sample of "Super Freak" for the hit single "U Can't Touch This" made PLEASE HAMMER, DON'T HURT 'EM the biggest selling rap album in history.
CatDesigners Are The New Featured Artist On The Bathtub Music Website
CatDesigners are an eclectic, emotive and evocative indie band from London. Both their debut album, "Chemical Jazz", and the follow-up, "Strange Little Creature", have recently been made available via Bathtub Music, an online CD store. Bathtub Music has also made CatDesigners the site's new "featured artist".
Bathtub Music, launched on June 25th 2004, is a musician friendly, advertisement free, independent CD store that sells music sent directly from the musicians that created it. The music there is ONLY created by INDEPENDENT ARTISTS or musicians affiliated with independent labels. CatDesigners are proud to be associated with the site and its philosophy, "Independent Music for Independent Minds".
CatDesigners describe their music as "somewhere between Bowie, Beck, Brel, Blur and Buckley" and, after releasing their debut, "Chemical Jazz", in 2003, the follow-up, "Strange Little Creature", has been equally well received by the critics.
* CatDesigners' second consistently fine album (Whisperin' & Hollerin')
* This is a better follow-up album than it has any right to be (Phase 9)
* Nick Troop's haunting Morrison-meets-Byrne voice is hard to ignore or resist (Music Morsels)
Piracy: 28.000 Sound And Videocarriers Seized In Rome, 7.500 In Naples
The Municipal Police of Rome, during a recent raid, seized 28.000 counterfeited sound and videocarriers and arrested 11 Senegalese. The operation, named "Airone" from the Roman street where the investigations began two years ago, was ordered by Public Prosecutor Pietro Saviotti. Six houses in various towns of the Roman province were searched and 28.000 illicit carriers - audio and videocarriers and videogames - were seized. The whole trade value is more than 200.000 euros. As a result of this operation, carried out in cooperation with FAPAV (Audio and Videographic Anti-Piracy Federation) and with SIAE's Antipiracy Division, 24 extra-Europeans were charged; 11 of them, of Senegalese nationality, were arrested. Moreover, the Italian police have acquired further important data to carry on the investigation, also in other Italian cities.
At the same time, the Custom Service of Afragola, a town near Naples, in cooperation with SIAE and FAPAV, seized an illegal store of illicit carriers in Naples. About 7.500 carriers - CDs, DVDs and CD Play Stations - were seized. An Italian was arrested.
D'Art Radio Playing The Indies On The Internet
In the music industry, indies constitute 25% of the industry. With a quarter of the industry designating this group, where is the representation? D'Art Radio http://www.dartradio.com emerges as an Internet community including a radio station that caters to Urban, Techno, Alternative Rock and Pop. To maintain this belief, D'Art Radio will continue to seek and review indie artists and DJ's, to expose new talent. Interested artists are able to submit their music to be aired while also being marketed through a variety of avenues. Selection is based on artists that create cutting edge music that effectively rivals those that are within the mainstream community. This community recognizes indies and its genres; moreover, D'Art Radio facilitates in creating a stronger voice by linking artists, their music, advocacy groups and emerging avenues together in order to propel this progressive movement. D'Art Radio formulates partnerships with industry groups in entertainment and media in order to gain global exposure for indies. In this manner, D'Art Radio is where indie music hits the spot.
"In a given hour, the same 10 artists are played and yet you know there are more. D'Art Radio answers this common question 'Where's the rest of the music?'," - Arlene Smith, Operations Manager

Back-to-School Poll To Name The "Copyright-Crusading" Ferret
Elementary school students heading back to school in September will be invited to name the "Play It Safe in Cyber Space" mascot, a "copyright-crusading" ferret who teaches tech-savvy kids about cyber ethics.
Beginning September 1, thousands of kids nationwide are expected to log on to www.playitcybersafe.com to vote for one of five ferret names by the end of the month. The winning name will be unveiled in January in a new, educational comic book curriculum.
"Play It Safe in Cyber Space" is the Business Software Alliance's (BSA) education program that teaches children the importance of responsible computer and Internet use, respect for digital creativity and copyright protection.
"Computer usage is commonplace in youth education today, and good legal and ethical behaviors need to be taught with the technology," said Diane Smiroldo, vice president, public affairs for BSA. "We hope that naming the ferret and creating a comic book curriculum that focuses on respecting digital copyrighted works will be a fun way to remind kids and educators about the importance of learning and practicing good cyber ethics."
Benefit Fraudsters Arrested In Piracy Crackdown
The BPI (British Phonographic Industry) has united with the Department for Work and Pensions (DwP) in a nationwide campaign against music piracy - which has already led to the arrest of 57 people who had allegedly been ripping off the music industry, film industry, computer games industry and the taxpayer.
Codenamed Operation Zouk, this first wave of countywide raids, including Concett, Liverpool, Sefton, Manchester, Newcastle, Halifax, Bradford, and Grimsby - saw hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of fakes seized along with a massive quantity of duplication equipment.
Out of the 57 arrests, 45 individuals had been claiming state benefits whilst generating massive profits through the counterfeiting of music, film and computer games.
"Music piracy is a massive problem in the UK. The UK record industry invests tens of millions of pounds each year in new artists, which creates £365 million for the UK treasury." says BPI Director of Anti-Piracy David Martin. "Not only is that investment is under serious threat from piracy, but with about 70% of music pirates are claiming benefits as well they're costing the taxpayer a fortune as well."
