"Although many of the 15 tracks can be appreciated singly or in pairs - several of them segue together - the disc must be heard without interruption to get the full effect of the various parts. Together, these compositions and interludes paint a stirring portrait of Nash through fine writing, bright recording and crisp performances." FOJAZZ
"Jazz Cycles" is one of the last recordings Paul produced with his ensemble, the Manhattan New Music Project, but the material in this set has been developed over many years. These pieces have a richness which makes them worth playing and hearing many times over. Paul's compositions were orchestrated with compelling accompaniments and background figures that inspired his soloists to greater heights. Additionally, Paul included beautifully scored ensemble passages utilizing the wide variety of instrumental colors available in his ensemble. Written from materials collected over the course of 30 years and completed in the last year of his life, Jazz Cycles is a kind of suite where each track may be heard as a movement in a larger artistic structure.
Now in its seventeenth year of programming, Manhattan New Music Project is a performing arts organization that is recognized worldwide for artistic excellence in jazz and contemporary music. Begun in 1990 by a group of like-minded composers with the aim of fostering the creation and presentation of new musical works, MNMP has sought to cross traditional musical boundaries and catalyze imaginative projects and collaborations involving the creation of new work through performances, recordings, educational and collaborative activities.
