Nick "Brownman" Ali Chosen Toronto's Best Jazz Artist Of 2005 By NOW Magazine

The people, not the purists, have spoken. NOW Magazine, Toronto's favourite and most comprehensive source for information on the music that makes the city tick, has chosen Trinidadian-Canadian, NYC-schooled trumpet icon Nick "Brownman" Ali as Best Jazz Artist in the 2005 "Best of Toronto" Awards.

NOW MAGAZINE writes:

BEST JAZZ ARTIST: Nick "Brownman" Ali
"Nick "Brownman" Ali is a renegade, a tireless trumpeter whose outspokenness on his genre's scene - to the dismay of those he's pissed off - has only increased his profile as one of the city's most intrepid jazz figures. Of course, the Toronto-based Trinidadian would be nowhere without his tireless, multi-faceted approach (Ali leads six bands), broad cultural span and innovative sensibility. While snobby jazz purists may turn up their noses, Ali continues to embody the music's true spirit." ~ NOW Magazine, Oct.27, 2005

"Yeah I'm knocked out! To be recognized with this distinction means a huge amount to me given how many monstrously talented, visionary, gifted jazz musicians this city encapsulates," says Ali. "There's no compliment that means more to me than knowing that this thing I do is resonating with people in the city I live. Every night out, it's so gratifying to connect with new music fans who dig both original music, like what I do with CRUZAO yet still embrace it when I'm paying homage to the legends like with FIVE WEEKS FOR MILES." When asked about NOW's reference to him as a "renegade" Ali states, "I don't know if that's quite the word for me, but I definitely do like to try and challenge people's own perceptions of musical convention. And I think it shows that Toronto's perceptions of jazz are being influenced really positively by the deeply creative diversity you find here in the city. That's a great sign for the future of the art here in Canada and inspiring in terms of new possibilities as I walk this very long path in front of me."

Kobo Town Brings Nick "Brownman" Ali to Town at The Speakeasy

Toronto-based Kobo Town will be performing their unique blend of traditional calypso, roots reggae and West Indian folk music at The Speakeasy with special guest Nick "Brownman" Ali. One of Canada's most acclaimed jazz trumpet players, Brownman was recently voted Toronto's Best Jazz Artist of 2005 by the readers of NOW Magazine the city's most comprehensive and respected print media for music information.

"... performing with Kobo Town I couldn't help but be struck with the sparse and languid vibrations, yet layered in vocal poignancy with Drew's lyrics embodying the best in the Trinidadian spirit of storytelling," noted Brownman after appearing with the band's September 14th show at Clinton's.

Named after the historic neighborhood in Trinidad's Port-of-Spain where calypso was born amid the boastful, humourous and militant chants of the roaming stickfighters, Kobo Town has been sharing this tradition of rhythmic and melodic cross-pollination with audiences around Ontario, including Kaiso Breakfast Lime ( Scarborough), The Studio Theatre (Perth ), Clinton's Tavern (Toronto ), Mercury Lounge (Ottawa). Kobo Town will be headlining the University of Toronto "Hurricane Relief Concert" this December.

WHAT: Kobo Town, featuring Nick 'Brownman' Ali
WHERE: The Speakeasy, 120 Church Street, Toronto
WHEN: Thursday, November 10 - 9:00 PM

Musician's Can Now Connect On-Line - Easily

A solo performance may touch the heart and soul of an audience, but for the serious musician or singer, there's nothing more enjoyable than performing with other musicians.

Until recently, finding the right musician for a professional performance or a casual jam session meant posting a flyer in a music store or depending on word-of-mouth. Today however, through the use of an innovative Internet site, that missing bass player or singer is only a mouse click away.

Musician's Lair is a new website that provides an easy to use on-line environment where musicians, singers, and bands can locate and interact with other musicians. The site, located at www.musicianslair.net, enables musicians of all levels of abilty to connect with fellow artists, via a selective and comprehensive database. Through the use of usernames and on-site private messaging, all searches on Musician's Lair remain completely anonymous.

"The original idea for the site came from my own frustration," explains musician and site developer Mike Horton, "I became dissatisfied with the traditional way of finding people to play with. I usually posted a flyer in a music store and hoped the right people would happen to see it. There was no way to screen musicians and I ended up wasting a lot of time."

Devin Carmicle's Hard Rocking Solo Debut Portrait Audio Emotion Now Available

Musically, Portrait Audio Emotion sits somewhere between Velvet Revolver and Switchfoot, but it's not sitting still. The dynamically explosive "Kari Anovich" is a contemporary hard rock gem, with its breathy vocals and dreamlike guitar erupting into a pounding, double-time chorus thick with heavy guitars. "Divide" is an atmospheric, darkly compelling blend of crunchy riffs, Slash-y lead lines, and piano accents over Carmicle's raspy, expressive vocals. And "Walk in the Park," which instantly demands you sing along with it, brushes up against vintage pop-metal-ballad territory but avoids cliché thanks to Carmicle's genuine delivery and his feel for creating a thoughtful, introspective tone.

The tracks "Kari Anovich" and "Divide" have already received airplay, both having appeared on the Jeffery Henderson show on Los Angeles station KLAS. On the Web, Broadjam, Garageband, and Purevolume are also hosting tracks from Portrait Audio Emotion. Carmicle is currently putting together a band and plans to tour in support of the album.

A true kid of the '70s, Carmicle's first loves were Zeppelin, Rush, and Frampton. He picked up the six-string at the age of nine, though he would spend nearly a decade playing bass in rock bands throughout his native Midwest. He landed in New York City during the height of the glam metal era and resumed his guitar playing with a band called CC Star, which made its debut at the hallowed CBGB's. After years on the club circuit, some touring, plenty of demos, and no luck landing a good label offer, "I wanted to take a stab at writing and producing everything from the ground up." He left New York to spend some time on the L.A. music scene, and eventually landed in Tampa Bay, Florida.

Statement By Prophet, Vocalist For U.S. Shock/Thrash Metal Band, 'St. Madness'

"I have been diagnosed with the same cancer as Lance Armstrong and Tom Green. Though this is a very difficult time for me, my family and St. Madness, together we are all standing tall. I must have one of my testicles removed and I have cancer in my lymph nodes in my back. This Sunday, October 23rd, a writer from The Phoenix (Arizona) New Times magazine is coming to my house to interview me. After the interview, I am going to shave my head for their cameras, and then I am going to give my hair to 'Locks of Love' (http://www.locksoflove.org)for children who need hair for wigs.

This is a disease that anyone can get at anytime. I don't feel that God is punishing me or anything like that. We all have sufferings to deal with in this life and it's just my turn. I plan to beat this and to be stronger than ever!!!

May the light of good Karma shine on you always!!!

Peace,

Prophet/St. Madness"
