'Chicken Dinners' New Acoustic Americana CD By Chuck McCabe

Woodshed Productions is happy to announce the release of Chuck McCabe's new CD, "Chicken Dinners".

As Chuck's third album on the BlahBlahWoofWoof label, Chicken Dinners marks a philosophical return to his childhood in the South, and his early musical years as a 5-string banjo picker in a bluegrass band. With a little banjo, a lot of his trademark fingerstyle guitar, and homespun wit, the material fits comfortably into the Americana genre.

There are guest performances by veteran folkie Mary McCaslin and fiddlers Joe Weed and James Fingers Shupe (formerly with Dan Hicks). Bobby Black, from Asleep at the Wheel adds Hawaiian steel on one track. There is minimal percussion (mostly brushes on a snare) and dobro, fiddle, harmonica and mandolin round out the instrumentation for an overall woodsy, folkie sound.

Having won the prestigious Woody Guthrie songwriting competition for a topical song about the working poor (Minimum Wager) McCabe has proved he has a serious side too. However, most of the new material is down-home and humorous, with grandmas, dawgs and smokin' behind the backstop.

McCabe says: "I'm writing about a lot of stuff that happened to me when I was a kid... I guess it took me this long to figure it all out!"

Mounted Police Seize 'Bootleg' Rock Concerts

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has seized several hundred 'bootleg' copies of live concerts of numerous Canadian and international recording artists and has charged a Hamilton man with five counts of copyright infringement. The seizure was made at a retail event open to the public at a downtown Hamilton hotel on June 13th, 2004. Charges were laid yesterday. Information provided by investigators from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) to the RCMP led to the seizure and the subsequent charges.

The 'bootleg' musical works seized on June 13th by police include approximately 1,140 DVDs; 1,570 VHS tapes; 340 CDs; 50 audiocassettes and 5 CDRs (video in CD format). They contain 'bootleg' live concerts of Canadian artists including Shania Twain, Nickelback, The Guess Who, Jann Arden, Rush, Avril Lavigne, Bryan Adams, Neil Young, The Tragically Hip and The Barenaked Ladies. The concerts were illegally recorded in numerous venues in North America including Toronto and Hamilton. Other musical works seized include concerts by The Rolling Stones, The Who, Guns and Roses and Bruce Springsteen among many others.

Johnny Clegg with Savuka & Juluka Live! And More...

Over the years, musician Johnny Clegg has worked hard to merge two worlds - the English-speaking and the African American culture of South Africa - and succeeded in doing so with the formation of the first interracial band - Jaluka. However, the group formed around the time of apartheid, which brought upon unforeseen complications including the banning of their first album by the South African government. Having to deal with so many uncontrollable issues, the group broke up in the mid-80's, and Clegg formed another band with Savuka, combining European pop music with South African melodies.

Eagle Rock Entertainment reflects on the lifelong career of world music virtuoso and Billboard Music Award-Winner Johnny Clegg with the DVD release of Johnny Clegg with Savuka & Juluka Live! And More... This DVD is a two-hour retrospective of Clegg's significant career moments and events. Songs performed include "Jericho," "It's An Illusion," "Cruel Crazy Beautiful World," "Umfazi Omdala," "Siyayilanda," among others. In addition, featured on the DVD are nine Savuka videos, four Juluka videos, tracks from "Savuka - Live in Paris," and two tracks from "Juluka - Live in Cape Town."

Johnny Clegg has broken South African barriers and has found great success in both Europe and Africa. Showing yet another step on his path to international stardom, Johnny Clegg with Savuka & Juluka Live! And More... will be available July 27, 2004 on DVD for a suggested retail price of $19.98. This film has a running time of 150 minutes. Special DVD extra features include an interview with Johnny Clegg, "Asimbonanga" performed with Nelson Mandela in Frankfurt, a dance performance of Mantombana with Juluka, a video of Savuka's "Scatterlings of Africa," which was the song featured in the 1989 movie Rain Man, and lyrics from some of their most popular songs.

BPI Welcomes Lengthy Prison Term For Britain's Biggest Bootlegger

The UK Recorded Music Industry's trade association The BPI (British Phonographic Industry) welcomed the three-and-a-half year jail sentence handed down to Mark Purseglove, one of Britain's most notorious music pirates.

Purseglove, 33, was today jailed and ordered to forfeit all of his assets after being sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment on charges of Conspiracy to Defraud the UK recorded music industry. The confiscation order, amounting to £1.8 million, is a British record for music piracy.

Estimated by the BPI to be one of the biggest bootleggers in world, Purseglove had amassed a £6.6 million fortune in 11 years of music piracy. He has now lost all of his assets including two homes in Chelsea, a home in Brighton and his Aston Martin sports car.

Wampus Rolls Out Debut CD From Cafebar 401

Brimming with darkly sweet pop hooks, Cafebar 401 blends Bowie-esque vocal presence with danceable grooves rooted in Euro-rock. Currently setting the Dutch pop scene ablaze, the band has appeared this year on Dutch national television and radio. Their relentlessly contemporary sound calls to mind Coldplay, Masters of Reality, Muse, Beck, Soulwax, Radiohead, and Queens of the Stone Age, but they bring something of their own to the party.

After signing with Wampus last year, Cafebar 401 rated an in-depth profile in the influential Dutch daily, De Telegraaf, and was featured prominently on Dutch television with SBS6. They are becoming fixtures at pop festivals up and down The Netherlands, including Dauwpopfestival, Struikpaaspop, IO-festival, and Wollipop.

Cafebar 401 leader Tije Oortwijn grew up listening to the Black Crowes, the Rolling Stones, and Masters of Reality. He first piloted grunge-driven bands during the mid-'90s. Gradually he absorbed his influences and concocted the shadowy pop confections of Cafebar 401. Combining the roar of alternative rock with the drum-and-bass of N.E.R.D., Timbaland, Daft Punk, Cassius, and Outkast, Cafebar 401 evokes a hipper Foo Fighters, a fun and funkier Bush. The irrepressible "Something Worth Dying For," one of the band's live staples, boasts an uptempo drum-and-bass beat with a Fu Manchu-like guitar riff and a Masters of Reality-style chorus.

EMI Group Plc Chairman's Statement - 2004 Annual General Meeting

"On a global basis, the recorded music market has shown encouraging trends in the first few months of our financial year. The US market has now enjoyed ten consecutive months of growth and the next two largest markets, Japan and the UK, have also seen positive trends. The markets of Continental Europe, however, remain difficult. Digital music continues to develop, with the recent successful launch of new legitimate services in several countries.

"In our recorded music division, EMI Music, the implementation of both the outsourcing of manufacturing in Continental Europe and the US and the restructuring of selected labels is on schedule.

"Our release schedule so far has featured major new albums from the Beastie Boys and Lenny Kravitz. During this financial year, we have also seen good ongoing sales worldwide from a number of artists including Utada Hikaru and Norah Jones. In addition, Joss Stone's Soul Sessions and Keith Urban's Golden Road have each surpassed two million units in sales and Yellowcard's Ocean Avenue has reached more than one million. Our release schedule for the remainder of the year is strong, particularly in the second half, with new releases from artists including Chemical Brothers, Chingy, Coldplay, Glay, Gorillaz, Helmut Lotti, Joss Stone, The Thrills, Keith Urban and Robbie Williams.

"In this financial year EMI Music Publishing has continued to enjoy strong chart positions especially in the US, UK, Germany and France, with releases from a range of songwriters including Jamie Cullum, Kelis, Alicia Keys, Scissor Sisters, Usher and Mario Winans. We have finalised new synchronisation licences with many companies including American Express, Target and Jaguar. In April, we also completed our purchase of the final 20% stake in Jobete, the Motown song catalogue.

"As we highlighted in May, given the phasing of both our recorded music release schedule and the savings from our restructuring programme, we expect the second half to account for a higher proportion of sales and profits than it has in prior years. With this strong release schedule and the progress we are making in both of our businesses, we remain confident that we will achieve our financial targets for the full year."
